Using your Blood Glucose Meter

Glucose meters do not have to be complicated, confusing, or even overwhelming. Glucose meters are a very important part of your life as a person with diabetes, but that makes the average glucose meter no more of a confusion than it needs to be. There are a few simple tips to using your blood glucose meter that makes it easy, fast, and relatively pain free as well as accurate. These tips are very important and it would benefit any diabetic to keep these in mind while testing with their glucose meters.

First, it is extremely important to always read and re-read every single direction in your instruction or owner’s manual for your glucose meter. There are dozens of different glucose meters on the market today, and though some may look the same, there are often one or two steps that are different in their operation, which is important to remember when using a glucose meter.

Second, always make sure you have all your needed materials laid out before you begin testing. This will help keep mess down and efficiency and accuracy up. Going from one step to the next quickly and efficiently will help you keep from getting blood everywhere and make things faster and easier in your life.

Finally, always make sure to correctly dispose of any diabetic testing supplies that are disposable in the correct way immediately after each testing. This means putting used needles in a bio-hazard container for disposal, immediately wrapping and disposing of alcohol swabs, blood-stained napkins, and testing strips as well. Disposing of all disposable supplies immediately after using them will ensure no one gets hurt or no mess is made after the test is complete.
