Diabetes Blood Sugar Levels – Tips on How to Monitor Your Blood Glucose at Home

Chances are if you need tips on how to monitor your blood glucose levels at home, you own a lot of diabetic recipes, diabetic diet plans, exercise tips, medications, and a good quality blood glucose meter – but lack the knowledge to accurately and effectively monitor your levels at home for your benefit and your doctor’s help. There are several tips and processes that are very useful for monitoring blood glucose levels from the comfort of your own home, and they are very easy to remember and accomplish alone.

Keep Careful Records

Monitoring your blood glucose levels at home depends greatly on using your glucose meter and keeping careful records of what your glucose meter tells you. Every time you measure your blood glucose level, it is important to write down immediately the time, date, and result of that test. Writing it down immediately will keep you from forgetting your result and requiring you to re-test to get it again.

Measure Often

Testing yourself with your glucose meter several times throughout the day, especially if you are just learning to manage and control your diabetes. Testing yourself at specific times throughout the day is one day to do it. Another is to measure before and after specific events, including as soon as you wake, before and after you eat each time, before and after your medication, before and after your daily exercise, and before bedtime. Testing often will help you and your doctor get a better idea of what hurts or helps your diabetes to stay under control, and can give great information on what dosage of medications/insulin or what exercise regimen and when to eat.

Measure Correctly

Probably the absolute most important tip that can be giving on the subject of monitoring your blood glucose levels from home is to make sure your glucose meter is coded correctly and that you use it correctly, every time. The importance of this tip cannot be over-emphasized. Read and re-read the instruction manual for your glucose meter, and practice once or twice with your doctor present in case he or she can give you any operation tips. Always take the time to test correctly with your glucose meter – otherwise, testing your blood glucose levels will be completely useless and no correct monitoring will take place at all.
