Top 10 Common Diabetes Myths

by Jack Clarke

These are ten myths about type 2 diabetes mellitus, but there are many others who little by little we will banish from our mind to get a good control of the condition and have a great life:

#1 The diabetes cure: False. Diabetes is a chronic degenerative disease that can be controlled through a balanced diet, cardiovascular exercise and taking medications on time, but so far science has not found a cure. Remember that diabetes is caused by a deficiency in insulin production of recipients thereof.

#2 It is possible that alternative medicine does offer a cure: False. A lot of people are seduced by this belief. There are no miracle cures for diabetes or for any chronic condition, so forget about the teas, herbs, vaccines and any other magical plant.

#3 Diabetes is contagious: False. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and 2. The latter most commonly develops especially in adults, although there is some tendency among immediate relatives, ie, between parents and children, that does not mean that they are "contagion" but actually is because they share certain risk factors such as overweight or malnutrition.

#4 Eating too many sweets causes diabetes: False. That a person to consume sugar in large quantities does not mean they will develop the disease, as this is due to the combination of several risk factors such as heredity, sedentary lifestyle and overweight, however, too much candy causes weight gain and thus increases the chances of developing diabetes. But if you already have the disease, sweets triggers an increase in glucose levels as patients are advised to not consume them.

#5 An anger, fright or other outside event can cause diabetes: False. As already mentioned, this condition is the consequence of certain flaws in metabolism, particularly in regard to insulin, this imbalance occurs gradually without the patient being aware of it.

#6 Children with diabetes do not grow: False. Children and adolescents with the condition that keep your blood sugar at acceptable levels and responsibly take care of your health, grow normally.

#7 The cactus plant reduces glucose: Maybe, but not required. The cactus and some other vegetables contain large amounts of fiber and water, which gives you a feeling of satiety when eating, also causes glucose to be absorbed more slowly and is therefore reducing blood levels, however, it only has a positive effect but not cure, nor can relieve or control diabetes.

#8 The juice-based diets control disease: False. A person who is subjected to a diet based simply on the consumption of grapefruit juice, pineapple, lemon or other fruit in his body after fasting can have serious consequences, because even though weight loss is achieved and reduced glucose, it also reduces the vitamins, minerals and other elements necessary for the body so that it runs the risk of hypoglycemia that ends in a swoon or a coma.

#9 You can eat a lot of light products: False. Diet products for people with diabetes do have to take into account calories in dietary intakes. It is true that they might contain less fat or less sugar but it does not mean you can eat without too much control because they accumulate in your body and cause overweight. It is best to consume foods at balanced measure.

#9 Carbohydrates are the enemies of diabetes: Maybe, but not required. Carbohydrates are necessary and important in the diet of all people regardless of whether they have diabetes. This is because it is the main source of energy in the body, but you have to know what and what not to eat, for example, pastries and soft drinks contain many complex carbohydrates and sugars and should be avoided, but white bread and Cereals are an excellent source of these nutrients and will not do you harm if you eat them in moderation.

#10 Insulin causes various complications: False. This is one of the most common beliefs and the most dangerous. Insulin is the hormone that regulates the amount of blood glucose. People with type 2 diabetes have faults in the metabolism of this, and therefore require either oral medications or insulin injections. Not controlling the disease which causes blindness, kidney failure, amputations and many other consequences that can and should be avoided.

Do not be prey to misinformation! Learn and know about your condition and take control of your life. Utilize the expertise available and when concerns arise do not be afraid to ask, because that is the difference between survival and to live life fully.
