New Year's Quiz, 2010

I did this New Year's quiz last year, and thought it might be nice to bring back here to recap 2010. It was a strange and difficult year for us. Although it was among the more difficult in recent memory (job loss, chronic illness, etc.), I'd still say we made it through happily. 1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?Gave myself LOTS of injections, went to plenty of new places and restaurants, dealt with Nick's job loss and my diabetes.2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I'm not a New Year's resolution sort of girl. I figure, if you want to make a change, why not just do it right away? The year's are too continuous in my mind to see a new year as a blank slate. So, I don't think I'll be making this year either.3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My oldest friend Jenny, and I think that's it!4. Did anyone close to you die?
No. 5. What countries did you visit?Italy! I've got lots lined up for 2011!6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?More motivation. Towards the end of 2010, my stamina really flagged. I want so desperately to get my degree finished, but sometimes it's so much easier to sleep late and find things to do around the house.7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?February 4. That was the day of my diagnosis.8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Being elevated to candidacy in June! I can now officially say I'm a PhD candidate, and only this pesky dissertation is standing in my way of being Dr. Jasmine.9. What was your biggest failure?Probably not communicating as often as I should with my loved ones.10. Did you suffer illness or injury?A few colds, and then there's the diabetes thing.11. What was the best thing you bought? This one is tricky. We like to spend money on experiences rather than things, and the only new objects I can think of were paid for by either the Pioneer Woman or my insurance.12. Where did most of your money go?
The mortgage. Won't this always be the answer to this question?13. What did you get really excited about? My trips to Italy, San Diego, and Missouri. Getting my insulin pump and CGM. Acceptance at a few conferences for 2011. Finishing my dissertation proposal.14. What song will always remind you of 2010?Hmmmmm, maybe something by Mumford and Sons. Or Dave Matthews, since we saw him in concert in 2010.15. Compared to this time last year, are you:
– happier or sadder? I think the same.– thinner or fatter? Thinner.– richer or poorer? Pretty close to the same.16. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Sleep. I always wish I had more sleep. Also, talking to my loved ones on the phone. Exercise should be on this list too.17. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Fought with my husband. It's not that this is an all the time thing, but fighting is never fun and most of the time it's worthless. We're on the same team, and I need to keep that at the front of my mind sometimes.18. How did you spend Christmas? In Missouri, with family. First in Springfield and then in St. Louis. Same as last year.19. What was your favorite TV program? This is tough. I discovered Bones and Lie to Me this year, continued to love The Wire and Mad Men. 20. What were your favorite books of the year?

I read several excellent books this year. The Zookeeper's Wife, by Diane Ackerman and Bel Canto, by Ann Patchett were maybe my favorite.21. What was your favorite music from this year?
Nobody new in the repertoire, except Mumford and Sons and Punch Brothers. I still love my old standbys.22. What were your favorite films of the year?Of those I saw in theaters, probably Inception, Harry Potter 7, and Agora.23. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?I turned 27 this year. We stayed at home and made a nice dinner on my birthday, but continued to celebrate the next day by meeting up with friends at the PMA and then going to NYC for the day.24. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? No diabetes.25. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?Slowly accumulating clothing that fits me, pulling out things from my early college days that fit me again. So, re-wear chic?26. What kept you sane?

Home with my little family. My nearly daily phone calls with Rhiannon.27. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.
Life continues to throw curve balls. Nick and I seem fairly good at adapting to those. It shows me that we have a good foundation for the future, for more curve balls.Funny to read last year's list after finishing this one. What a year, 2010! So much to look forward to in twenty eleven!
