A Day Without a Blooper is Like a Day Without Insulin

Today’s prompt: Whether you or your loved one are newly diagnosed or have been dealing with diabetes for a while, you probably realize that things can (and will) go wrong.  But sometimes the things that go wrong aren’t stressful – instead sometimes they are downright funny!  Go ahead and share your Diabetes Blooper – your “I can’t believe I did that” moment – your big “D-oh” – and let’s all have a good laugh together!!

From the death of the very first insulin-producing beta cell, Type 1 diabetes is a disease built on bloopers.

Things go wrong, and we fix them — or at least attempt to. Sometimes we learn from these mistakes, and sometimes we chalk it up to the cruel reality of chronic disease. Sometimes they aren’t even mistakes, just things that happen as you try to make your way in life as a productive member of society and your endocrine system at the same time.

Why do I make a concerted effort to remember to bolus for my morning vat of Greek yogurt? Because when I’ve forgotten in the past, I’ve paid dearly: headache, fatigue, hours of rage bolusing. Was that first missed bolus a blooper, or a lesson — or both?

It’s the same for almost all of the habits I’ve developed in my years with diabetes. “Bloopers” are how I know to suspend delivery on my pump for exactly 45 minutes after a bad low, that red wine makes my blood sugar drop and anxiety makes it skyrocket. Past “bloopers” keep me from falling asleep without reconnecting my pump, or going for a walk without a tiny bag of jelly beans stuffed into my sports bra.

Of course, I can tell myself all day long how valuable these incidents are to my experience with diabetes management, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t include the recent highlights of my Serious Blooper reel.

Favorites include:

The time I went to a client meeting with nothing edible but pistachios in my purse — and paid.

The time I sleep-assaulted my roommate in a hotel in Charleston.

The time I accidentally let my nephew give me a massive dose of insulin.

The time I left my meter at a hotel bar in Atlanta.

The time I consumed half a dozen Barq’s root beers before I realized they weren’t of the diet variety.

And last but not least:

The time I drank whiskey, had a serious low, threw up in the bathtub and had to use glucagon.
