Erectile Dysfunction Medications

There are only 3 medications approved by the FDA for treatment of impotence or erectile dysfunction. Impotence or erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or continue to have erections. The most common treatment for impotence or erectile dysfunction is penis pumps or ED pumps. However, penis pumps and ED pumps are not medications, as they can be purchased without a prescription. There are 3 medications to treat impotence: Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

Each of the three impotence or erectile dysfunction medications work in the same way: by increasing nitric oxide levels in the body. This chemical is responsible for sexual stimulation causing blood vessels in the penis to become open and relaxed for blood to be able to circulate. During an erection, the blood stays in the penis due to the vessels being closed after the blood engorges the area. In the case of impotence, the vessels do not open enough for the blood to enter. The medicines don’t create an erection, but begin arousal so that erections are possible.

Impotence medications only vary in how long they work or how long they take to begin having an effect. Viagra and Levitra are taken without food once daily, while Cialis can be taken once daily with or without food. Both Viagra and Levitra work for 24 hours, while Cialis is good for up to 36 hours. All three medications should be taken anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes prior to sex taking place. Since they are medications, they are not safe for everyone to take. This is why so many doctors suggest penis pumps or ED pumps for impotence. These are noninvasive treatments that have no side effects and no drug interactions. You do not need a prescription to get penis pumps or ED pumps for impotence, whereas with the medications you do.
