What is a Blood Glucose Meter and Why Do I Need One?

If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, chances are you are very confused about a lot of things. Diabetic recipes, diabetic diets, exercise, and medications – all of these things may have been thrown at you in the course of just a few minutes at your doctor’s office when he or she gave you the news, and now you’re confused. Then your doctor mentions blood glucose meters, and your mind just shuts down. The good news is that your doctor is telling you the truth, all of these things – diabetic diet plans, exercise, diabetic recipes, medications, and your glucose meter is very important, but why?

What is It?

A blood glucose meter is a small machine that tests blood glucose levels in those with diabetes while they are in the comfort of their own home and at any time they need – day or night, twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. The glucose meter takes a small amount of blood by pricking the fingertip with a tiny needle. The blood is put against the tip of a coated testing strip, which is then put into the meter for measurement. The glucose level will show up on the screen of the glucose meter.

Why Do I Need One?

Though diabetic diet plans, exercise, medications, and diabetic recipes are all really good things to consider when you have diabetes, it is important to know that you cannot keep your blood sugar from dipping or soaring all the time. If you’re feeling off, the only way to know if your sugar level is up or down, or normal, is to test yourself right then. Glucose meters make this possible and keep a person with diabetes safe and knowing what their blood glucose level is, anytime, anywhere.
